Ray Allen decides to sign with the Miami Heat – Breaking News
In a shocking turn of events, Ray Allen has decided to sign with the arch rivals of his former team, the Miami Heat. Allen was the shooting guard of the Boston Celtics for the past five years, a part of the Big Three that helped the Celtics win the NBA championship
in 2008 and dominate the Eastern Conference over the past 5 seasons. The Celtics lost to the Heat in 7 games in the Eastern Conference Finals this past season.
Miami Heat owner Micky Arison tweeted on Friday night:
“Its 2:30 am in London and I was just woken up with great news. Welcome to the family #20!!”
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported that Allen has informed the Celtics management of his decision. His agent has also confirmed the news to the Associated Press.
The Miami Heat was eyeing the signing of Ray Allen since the NBA season finished. They have been looking to sign a quality three pointer to the roster for the past few years as the addition is sure to give them an edge over other teams.
Miami relies heavily on the penetration play of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Their ability to drive into the lane attracts defence inwards and leaves players open on the perimeter for three point shots. Any good three point shooter is sure to flourish in
the given scenario.
Allen, who leads the NBA All time list of three points made and shot 45% from beyond the arc last season, will fit in well into the team and do a great deal of damage while helping the Heat add another dimension to their offensive arsenal.
Miami only had the $3 million mini-mid level exception to offer Ray Allen. Boston was offering a $12 million two year contract. Allen chose Miami as he thought he had a better chance of winning another championship ring with the Heat. The fact that the Celtics
are giving a greater role to Avery Bradley and have also entered into an agreement with Jason Terry for a three year contract, must have raised doubts in Allen’s mind over his role in the team from next season.
Allen’s decision is sure to draw anger from Celtics fans but at the same time, is being welcomed by the Heat team. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were tweeting him throughout the time he was deciding, trying to convince him to join Miami. Allen had earlier
demanded a 3 year $27 million contract from the Celtics.
