Ray Allen extends contract; Will stay with Boston Celtics for at least one more year – NBA Update
Boston Celtics shooting guard and the one part of their big three, Ray Allen has taken up the option of another year on his contract. Ray had the choice of going out as a free agent this summer or extending the contract with Celts
for another year.
Allen is one of the all time great shooters in the history of the NBA. He was the NBA Three-point shootout Champion at the All Star weekend back in 2001. Ray has been selected a total of ten times in the NBA All Star teams. He
also has an Olympic gold medal from the 2000 Olympic games where he was a part of team USA.
He was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves back in 1996 as the fifth overall pick. However he was immediately traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a deal that saw Stephon Marbury move in the opposite direction. Ultimately, he started
his NBA career with the Bucks and reached the Eastern Conference Finals while at the franchise.
Allen was traded to the Seattle Super Sonics in 2003 and reached personal highs in terms of points per game with the franchise in the 2006-2007 season. From there, he made the move to current team, the Boston Celtics.
Ray ranks 24th in NBA history for points scored with a staggering 22,286 points in total. In the current year, Ray Allen overtook Reggie Miller as the man with most 3-points shots made in NBA as well as the one with
the most 3-point attempts.
Ray’ decision to stay on with the Celtics hasn’t come as a surprise and it means that the “Big Three” of Boston, comprising Allen himself, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will stay together for at least one more year. The trio got
together back in 2007 when Kevin Garnett was brought in from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Ray Allen came from the Seattle Super Sonics. They were instantly named as the new “Big Three”.
Boston achieved great success in the first full season of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce as a group, going onto to win the 17th NBA World Championship in franchise history. They faced traditional rivals Los
Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals that time. However, two years later, they lost to the Lakers in the Finals. This year, Boston reached the Eastern Conference semifinals where they were outclassed by the newly established big three from Miami Heat.
The news of Allen’s decision to stay comes after Boston’s NBA title winning head coach, Doc Rivers, had earlier agreed to a new 5 year contract with the franchise. Kevin Garnett also has a year left on his deal while Paul Pierce
is tied to the Celtics for three more years.
