As the training camps loom, the war of words between Boston Celtics and Miami Heat has picked up...
Boston Celtics have been making virile comments about the Miami Heat for quite some time now.
It all started with their head coach Doc Rivers exhorting his team to develop a strong hate for the Heat. Jason Terry followed it by stating that he wanted to kill Miami Heat, and on Friday, Kevin Garnett took it a step further
by indirectly criticizing Ray Allen’s move to the South Beach during the off season.
"I don’t have Ray’s number anymore. I’m not trying to communicate. I'm just being honest with everybody in here... It’s just what it is.” He had said.
The Heat had stayed quite till now, perhaps waiting to answer the C’s on the court when they meet them in the season opener on Oct 30.
But on Saturday, Allen broke their silence and called KG’s comments as ‘shameful’;
"That's a shame," Allen said. "I'm a good person to talk to on the phone. ... I've been in weird trade situations the last few years. You always felt you had one foot in and one foot out, so I can't worry about it."
It is believed that Garnett lobbied hard to prevent Allen from leaving Beantown, but such were the differences between Allen and the duo of Rivers and Rajon Rondo that the shooting guard decided to ditch the Greens, even after
being offered a fatter contract.
His departure was one thing, but with Miami being the destination, the move was even more painful.
Heat have had the better of the Celtics ever since LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh decided to join hands in pursuit of multiple championships. The addition of Allen, the best three point shooter of all time, makes them
even more formidable now, and the prospect of another failure next season has perhaps forced the C’s to play mind games.
Allen tried to cool down the situation terming KG as his friend, regardless of the situation;
"I don't know how many miles apart we are, sometimes the translation gets messed up," Allen said. "We're friends regardless of what happens. He's got to do what he's got to do up in Boston."
It is clear though that the rivalry between Miami and Boston has just got bitterer.
