Ray Allen reveals why he ditched Boston Celtics in favour of Miami Heat – NBA Feature
Why Ray Allen left the Boston Celtics is a question that continues to intrigue us even today.
Many people think that it was due to Rajon Rondo’s attitude both on and off the court while some say it was all Doc River’s fault. Nothing is certain as far as the details are concerned, but what is, is that Boston created an atmosphere
which was just not good enough for the best three point shooter of all time.
Talking to Sports Radio Interviews recently, Allen opened up about the circumstances affecting his decision to make a switch to Miami Heat;
“It was a business decision and the team put me in the position where we had to move. We had to go. Miami was a better choice for us based on what the team was doing, so it wasn’t, don’t boo me, boo the team in a sense. Now it’s
out of my control. … When this contract situation came down, everybody in my circle — mom, family, brother, sister, friends from college, people who watched me since I was in high school and since I was in college — nobody wanted me to resign in that situation
because they thought, ‘There [is] so much left in you and this team isn’t taking care of you or treating you right.’ That’s the way I felt and it was like, if you are going to come and not put out a good contract on the table then, hey, we gotta think about
going somewhere else.”
The Celtics had offered Allen a fatter contract as compared to that by Miami, but Allen chose the latter, giving way to barrage of criticism from the C’s fans and some of his former team mates. It was only two weeks back when Kevin
Garnett publically said that he does not maintain any contact with Allen and indirectly criticized his choice to join Boston’s fiercest rivals and nemesis. Perhaps he should have spoken out when Rivers decided to put his ‘friend’ on the bench in favour of
a second year guard.
The matter of fact is that Celtics dug their own grave in this case.
Players like Allen need attention and Rivers perhaps went a bit too far in a bid to retain Rondo and build a future around him. The Celtics point guard is still not a game changer, Allen was; he is still not a clutch shooter or
shooter of any pedigree for that matter, Allen was; and Rondo is still not a team leader as Allen was.
Rivers had to balance the equation, but he failed to do that and this will perhaps be one of his biggest coaching failures.
Allen now adorns the Miami Heat jersey with a well defined role and respect above all, and every time he will sink three-pointer next season, it will go directly into the hearts of the Greens.
