Raymarine St 4000 Wheel Drive

hey
my wheel pilot on my raymarine very loose moving up and down with no resistance. I assume the locking mechanism on the inside of the wheel has broken. Anyone deal with this before? I've called Raymarine and they have said that it should be sent in. In the interest of time and money I would like to effect a repair myself.
