Mike Woodson chooses Raymond Felton for the starting role; Jason Kidd to fill in as a reserve....
There had been a lot of uncertainty regarding the point guard position at the New York Knicks with the likes of Jason Kidd and Raymond Felton competing for the top spot. However, the question mark over the matter has been removed
as Mike Woodson recently revealed that Felton will be given the starting nod while Kidd will play as a back up to the younger of the two.
“I think he’s had opportunities over the years to run teams and he’s done a great job at it,” Woodson said. “At the end of the day, it’s still about the team. I don’t think anybody else on this team is going to care who starts,
but Raymond will probably be our starter.”
This also puts at an end to the speculation of Felton playing back up to Kidd. A lot of those rumours arose due to the fact that Felton did not have a great last season with the Blazers where he averaged 11.5 and 6.5 assists in
60 games. At Big Apple, he will look to get back to the same form that saw him average 17.1 points two seasons ago before being traded over to the Denver Nuggets.
Kidd who came over from the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent during the summer is ready to embrace the secondary role behind the 7 year veteran and firmly believes that Felton is a capable point guard.
“Ray can run the show as well as anybody,” Kidd said. “My job is to support Ray and help him with things I see and, when I go in, to get the lead or keep the lead. That’s as easy as it can be.”
The decision from Woodson to go with a younger point guard is rational rather than based on emotion. Sure, Kidd has been one of the premier point guards of the last decade, but he is touching 40, and putting extra burden on the
veteran might backfire for the team and the player himself.
