Rayo Vallecano seem to be in the mood to give teams in La Liga a tough time by winning their first two matches of the season.
After beating Real Betis in their second match of the season, Rayo Vallecano are high up on the league table with 6 points.
With a quick goal in the 2nd minute of the match, the Vallecanos took the lead, thanks to Piti’s goal via a stunning cross from Baptistao. Betis, however, bounced back into the game with a powerful retort by Jorge Molina.
There were no more goals until Baptistao showed what he could do in the 62nd minute, shooting a goal right past Betis’ goal keeper, Fabricio.
“It’s a dream come true,” Baptistao told the reporters, when asked about his winning goal. The young Brazilian, however, did come back down to reality and stated, “But we have to keep a clear head and keep working just as hard.”
Rayo Vallecano have not had the best Spanish League record, starting off in the Tercera Division in 1949 and only playing in 14 seasons in the Primera Division, of which the best position Vallecano reached was 9th back in the 1999-2000 La Liga
season.
However, their best football season was in 2000-2001, as they qualified for the UEFA Cup and went up to the quarter finals.
After this, Rayo ended up falling on difficult times, narrowly dodging relegation for two seasons, until they finally were beaten out of La Liga in 2003. The following year they were then brought down to the Segunda Division B.
After pulling up their socks, they got back into action, coming in 3rd in the Segunda Division B and gaining the top five positions in the division until they finally came in 1st in 2008, and then after another three seasons they reached
2nd in the Segunda Division, making it back into La Liga 2011, where they came in 15th.
Barcelona are currently on top of Rayo based on Goal difference. With Messi scoring two goals in the second half of the match, securing not only a win but also the 1st position in the league table and a five-point lead over rivals Real Madrid,
who lost their second game to Getafe.
However we can only hope and see what happens next.
With Real Madrid being 5 points behind and hungry to catch up, Rayo should not get too comfortable.
However, Rayo are proving to be a formidable force, and should not be taken lightly.
It is still too early to come up with a definitive outcome, but one can get ready for another exciting football season, with a heavy continuing rivalry between Madrid and Barcelona, and possibly a new rivalry sparked through Rayo’s recent improvement.
