  1. they bought all those expensive players back then(canseco, boggs, mcgriff, vinny castilla, roberto hernandez, wilson alvarez, aging vets

  2. Yea...Recession and not enough fans!

I'm not sure if there are more fans going to the games now, but they're still probably not even scratching out 20,000 fans a game(home game)

what a waste of hot dogs

And Tampa was a fairly new team in 2000 so they had leftover money

from 1998 so they still had lots of money, but as the years went on, they got better players and paid them more such as Kazmir, Crawford, Garza, and Pena

  3. Florida SUCKS.

I'm just happy that my SF Giants didn't move down there to St. Petersburg back in the 90's when they were threating to leave town.

  4. Wow man, you ought to have a look at the Marlins payroll history since 1993. And remember those two World Series wins, too.

  5. Since 2000, they had a lower fan base which equal to lower payroll. But with their winning record, their payroll should be a lot bigger now. It's up to the owner to spread the wealth.

  6. That's because the Rays have a lot of young prospects. And you don't go paying a rookie 25 million for his first year.

  7. Recession.

  8. Not a Ray's fan, but...

If they don't need to, why should they? Look at the 2003 Marlins, they had a pay roll of under $50M and went on to win it all, toppling the s****s who had a payroll over $150M.

Even as a Boston fan, I think it would be outstanding if the Ray's bring home some rings with a team payroll less than that of a certain single player from NY.
