  1. The Rays are a year older and this year Evan Longoria played and he has propelled them, recently Pena has been playing like last year. Also, getting rid of Delmon Young and getting Garza has been solid. They finally had a closer for the first time as well, but he is currently injured.

  2. I can tell you this - in no way would I have thought that the Rays would have the best record in the MLB (I thought the exact opposite). What's sad, though, is that they're in the bottom 5 in attendance average in the league.

  3. I would say the biggest difference from last season is confidence.....they scored a good amount of runs last season, but the pitching was so dreadfully awful that they could be up 5 or 6 runs in the 8th and still blow the game, which takes its toll on a team over a long season.  This year, the pitching has been all around quite impressive to say the least, so thats why theyre winning even the close low scoring games.  Its a much different feel when you go into a game knowing you can win the game, then dominate most of it and still lose

  4. Top rookie Evan Longoria is probably one of the main reasons. The whole rotation has stepped their game up to make it one of the best bullpens in the league. Troy Percival has helped all the young pitchers make the formerly worst in league bullpen to the best in league bullepn

  5. I think there success has something to do with taking the devil out of devil rays now there just called the Rays

  6. Jason Barlett's homer makes it 9-1 now.

It BIG difference is the pitching. I always knew the Rays had some offensive flares.  BJ really sprouted last season, in my opinion, I think BJ's had a better 07 than 08'.

But you look at the pitching.  James Shields finally made his turn last year.  And you kinda knew that this kid would finally start having a good future.  Matt Garza who was a top prospect for the Twins organization, I still dont think that was a good trade for them, especailly losing Santana and Silva.  You got Edwin Jackson, who the Rays had a lot faith in.  He had had a couple of really poor seasons and yet he remained in the majors nad now finally pitching solid baseball.  Sonnastine is a hot/cold kinda pitcher.  When teh Rays go into the playoffs, I would expect Sonnastine to pitch a minimum of 1 game a series.

But yea, pitching have been the huge key.  Even their bullpen.  They have so many arms to turn to down there, thats its so tough for opposition to score.
