Rayudu’s reaction was uncalled for: Kohli – Cricket News Update
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s stand-in skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ambati-Rayudu-c1007.
“He (Rayudu) should have instead walked to the dug out and celebrated the win with his teammates,” Kohli said while speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference. That sort of reaction was not needed.”
The incident occurred after the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians clinched a narrow 5-wicket victory over the Royal Challengers at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on May 14. The hosts set their opponents a challenging 172-run chase, courtesy a fine batting display by
the young http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mayank-Agarwal-c1937, but their bowlers were unable to defend the total.
The Mumbai Indians witnessed a complete top order collapse, and with 14 runs required off the last 6 deliveries, their chances appeared slim. However, they were propelled to victory via the efforts of Ambati Rayudu (whose 81 off 54 won him the Player of
the Match award), and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KA-Pollard-c1754 (who scored 52 and hit 3 boundaries in the last over), both of whom joined forces for a 122-run stand.
However, the post-victory celebrations turned ugly when Rayudu directed obscene and abusive language towards Harshal Patel, who reacted strongly, and made to move towards Rayudu before he was stopped by skipper Kohli. Both players had to be physically restrained,
and the altercation marred what had otherwise been a superb finish for the Mumbai Indians.
Rayudu’s teammate Kieron Pollard attempted to neutralize the situation by downplaying the incident. He pointed out that the Mumbai Indians were an aggressive side, and the intense pressure on teams in the latter stages of competitive tournament such as the
IPL often led to incidents such as the one in question.
This has not been the first instance of aggression from the Harbhajan-led side. In an earlier match against the Deccan Chargers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MM-Patel-c1987 and skipper Harbhajan were both guilty of showing extreme dissent towards a decision made by the umpire, while Rohit
Sharma received a warning after he kicked the stumps in frustration when his side conceded a nine-wicket defeat to the Royal Challengers Bangalore last week.
Rayudu was later fined 100% of his match fee, while Harshal Patel was fined 25%.
