Rayvin Giovanni's young career finished after big fall at Wimbledon
Rayvin Giovanni sustained a career ending injury at Wimbledon Tuesday night. Giovanni fell on the third bend of a 480-metre open race, and was carried from the track in front of a silent crowd.
Trainer Seamus Cahill, who is leading the Trainers Championship by a large margin thanks in part to Giovanni, later commented on the injury and confirmed everyone’s worst fears.
"He's finished. He's got two fractures in a front leg,” said Cahill.
The fall allowed 20-1 longshot, Coolavanny Rock, to win the race by a huge 10 lengths ahead of Kinda Ready, who was delayed by the fall. Also impacted by the fall were Brinkleys Estate, who finished in
third, Rockstar Royalty in fourth, and Micky Robbie in fifth.
Giovanni was young racer that many expected to have a long and very successful career. His injury is devastating to both Cahill, and greyhound racing fans. He was already the 20-1 favourite to win the
2011 Greyhound Derby, and was expected to bring in significant prize money over his career.
In September he won the £8000 Romford Puppy Cup final by 6¼ lengths over Little Urge after finishing in first place in two out of the three Romford Puppy Cup races. Before that, Giovanni won the £1000
Coral Champions Night Puppy Final by 5¼ lengths, again over Little Urge. He won the qualifying heat of Coral Puppy Final by 7 lengths. He also won the £6000 Williamhill.com Puppy Derby final by 5 lengths over Romeo Spartan.
Since beginning his career in June of this year, Giovanni has won 10 races in 13 attempts. He finished in second place in each of his three losses, losing to notable greyhounds: Tudor Price, Blonde Snapper,
and Bright Redcliff.
Giovanni had just turned two on 8 October, and had moved beyond the ‘puppy’ title into his adult career.
