Razif Sidek says Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat have meagre chances to win World Championships
Former Malaysian Doubles shuttler, Razif Sidek, says that Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat have meagre chances to win the Men’s Doubles title at the upcoming 2011 World Championships, starting from August 8, in London.
Razif, who is a former Doubles specialist, holds the opinion because of the poor performance of Tan Boon and Koo Kien for more than one year, as the duo failed to win any super series title since January, 2010.
Tan Boon and Koo Kien currently occupy the Number Four spot in the world rankings of the Men’s Doubles. The duo delivered an inspiring performance at the 2010 World Championships as they reached in the final, however, the pair lost the title match to China’s
Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng.
While talking about their current performance, Razif said, “The results show that they have been rather inconsistent this year. They are one of the top pairs in the world but that is not reflected in their results. I doubt they can win this year.”
The Malaysian players have been defeating top shuttlers from the world in different events, but at the same time they have got severe treatment from lower ranked shuttlers also. This fluctuation in results has not been able to build a strong belief in the
duo.
Razif said, “One has to have self-confidence, good character and produce consistent results. This will raise their profile prior to major events. I don’t think others fear them now. Koo and Tan started well in their careers (in 2006 and 2007) but they have
not been that inspiring in recent times.”
However, Razif wants from the core of his heart that the Malaysian pair deliver a better performance and prove his opinion wrong. He also added that he is optimistic the Rexy Mainaky, the Doubles coach, will make them mentally strong in the coming week.
Tan Boon and Kien Keat have the ability to beat all the top athletes in the world, however, clouds of doubt hang over their success in the world meet as their performances in the past few months have been completely unimpressive.
