Razif Sidek suggests BAM to overhaul its structure after shameful Thomas Cup outing
Former international Razif Sidek demanded drastic changes in Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) while raising voice against national body after shameful exit from the Thomas Cup Finals 2012.
Malaysia could not qualify even for the semi-finals and crashed out after losing to Denmark in knock-out stage which exposed their fragility and put a big question mark on their prospects in the London Olympics.
BAM came under fire for its poor planning and managerial skills and now former All-England champion Razif Sidek also criticised the governing body for their incompetency.
He believes that it is right time for President Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh and secretary Ng Chin Chai to admit their failure and review their plan of action to avoid same results in London games.
He said, "The president, secretary and the coaching and training committee must be responsible for what has taken place. You don't have to wait for another failure in the Olympics before starting a total overhaul."
Moreover, he also criticised Doubles head coach Tan Kim Her for his pointless strategy of breaking established partnerships and introducing scratch pairs in crucial match against Denmark.
The legendary doubles shuttler Razif stated that Kim Her failed to motivate his shuttlers in absence of Lee Chong Wei which ultimately resulted in Malaysia’s woeful exit from the prestigious team event.
He said, "The coaches must take responsibility because they make the final decision, not the players in a team event. If the players say they are not confident, it is Kim Her's duty to urge them to fight."
He also passed judgment on High Performance Team and Coaching and Training Committee while asserting to revamp coaching structure. He proposed to appoint a self-governing chief coach with full authority.
Razif said, "BAM must give the chief coach the full mandate to make decisions without interference. Failing which, he must be accountable and ready to face the music."
BAM has rejected this proposal many times but critics always give examples of countries like China, Korea, Denmark and Japan where a supremo is responsible to plan coaching programmes and strategies for the team and this practice has yielded best results
in these countries.
