we are going on the Princess cruise line and know that in Jeneau we are going to do the Mendel Glaicer helicopter tour and in Ketchikan we are doing the jeep and canoe trip but in Skagway we do no know which excursion would be best. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. White Pass RailRoad and the Liarsville Gold Rush Camp. Most cruise lines will offer a combination package including both

  2. We did the White Pass Railroad Trip. HIGHLY RECOMMENED this. It is a blast. You go up on the train come down on the bus. You stop in Liarsville, Alaska. Mining place. So much fun. Wish I were going... Have fun

  3. The white pass railroad is fantastic. In fact, it was my favorite shore excursion. If my memory doesn't fail me, this leaves out of Skagway. It is perfect for kids too. Lots of ooh's and aa's.

  4. As noted already, the best is the White Pass and Yukon Railroad combo tour. You take the train up the mountain to Fraser Canada. This train was built for the gold rush of the 1890's and early 1900's. There is good commentary of some of the sights you will see. The view of the valley from up top is great.

Coming down the mountain by bus, you stop at the border and can take pictures next to the "Welcome to Alaska, USA" sign.

At Liarsville they have a very cute program in addition to panning for gold. You and your kids will get a little tiny baggie with some gold flakes to take home.

  5. I strongly suggest the White Pass Railway tour.  It takes you right from the jetty in Skagway up through White Pass which was the original route to the Klondike.  You actually pass into British Columbia before you start heading down.  A great tour and well conducted.

  6. I would recommend the Alaska Sled Dog & Musher's Camp tour if your kids (or you) like dogs.  Besides the short sled ride, another highlight is meeting the puppies.

If that is not interesting to you, then I would also recommend the White Pass Scenic Railway.
