Re: School System in Spain?

I'm moving to Spain next year, and while looking at different schools' websites, it says there are four years of "ESO" and two years of "Batxillerat." It would be great if you could tell me which ages are in which grades (if that makes any sense). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. ESO is high school 14 - 16 (then you can leave school) so ESO is like Englands GCSE's and you get your Batxillerat if you go for 2more years like Englands A-Levels.

i moved to Spain when i was 13 so we had to look into this to and my fiancee went all through school in the Spanish sytem because he's Spanish. (in England you start high school at 11years old in Spain you dont start high school until 13/14 years old (i think they were going to change it so that you start high school at 11y/o here to, but that was in talks i think last year dont know if they did change it because we finished school 3years ago, but i think we would have heard if they had so i think its all still the same, either way ESO and Batxillerat would still be the same years just that ESO would be extended from 11 - 16 instead of 14 - 16)

  2. ESO is for years 11 to 15 or 12-16 (well, the way it works is that to enroll in Primero de ESO, that is the first year, you would have to turn 12 before the end of the year you are getting enrolled, that is, if you were to enroll yourself on Sep 2009, you would have to be 12 at that time or turn 12 before 31Dec2009) There are 4 course which are mandatory and they are mostly done in High Schools (Institutos) although some schools (Colegios) may have the option of taking ESO in the school itself. It stands for Educaci'on Secundaria Obligatoria. Please keep in mind that there are different curricular programs in 3 and 4 ESO, aiming to fulfill the needs of students who are thinking of doing Science in schools or arts (the core subjects are the same, but the level of Mathematics is different, or the Literature requirements)

Bachillerato is for 15-17 (or 16-18) and it is not mandatory. In case one is interested in joining a university or getting a Highly Qualified Diploma (I can't find best way to translate it. I'm referring to Modulos Formativos de Grado Superior, like a very specific training in specifics area like Secretary, Chemical Analyst Expert) then they would do Bachillerato. There are many more choices in terms of curricular alternatives, namely Science, Engineering, Arts, History/Geography

  3. Batxillerat is Catalán for the degree/diploma one gets when finishing high school or whatever you call the secondary school.  You need a bache to get into university.

    Not sure what eso means.
