I have a math formula:

t= [d/s] / [d/v]

I want to make d the subject. But for the life of me, i can't figure out how. Is it possible?

  1. looks hard

  2. No, you can't.

    The d's cancel each other out.

    When you divide fractions like you are there (I'm assuming that d, v, s, and t are all algebraic variables and you aren't doing calculus here) you invert the bottom fraction and multiply.

    The Right side of your equation becomes

    [d/s]*[v/d]

    When you do that multiplication, the d's cancel each other out, as you have one in the numerator and one in the denominator.

  3. I think that there might be an error in the question.

    It may be that it should read as :-

    t = d / s

    d = s t

    This looks reasonable as could be :-

    distance = speed x time.

  4. No, not as written.

    t = (d/s) / (d/v) = (d/s) * (v/d) = v/s

    Problem is that the variable d is redundant.  Since it is eliminated from the computation of t, it is irrelevant to it, and looking at it the other way round, the value of d cannot be determined in terms of t, v and s.
