Re-begginning Golfer, would like advice on new set of clubs?

Hi everyone,

I used to golf in high school but only with friends for fun. My first set of clubs I got at a garage sale. Old steel set that I just used to hit the ball around. Well, those are gone now.

Its been a long time since and I am finding in my job that many of the people around me golf and I would also like to pick it up again for my own pleasure. I am looking for a new set of clubs to begin/grow with. I am a value oriented person so and I have a little money now so that is not an issue if it is an investment. I am wondering which way I should go.

Should I buy a cheap set of clubs and then upgrade when I get better later? Should I buy a mid-range set to grow with? What brands/stores/locations online and BnM that I should look at? Is sizing a consideration? Anything else I am missing? Thanks.

  1. don't worry too much about equipment. just get an affordable full set. Spend your money on lessons, and upgrade later. If you must buy "name brand" clubs look into buying used. www.globalgolf.com is a great site for that.

one of the best deals i've found is the Nickent 3dx irons on ebay. one of them comes with a free 460cc square driver. they are solid clubs and very forgiving. i can't find the link on ebay rite now, but just search "nickent 3dx best deal". winning bids were around $280. great deal if u ask me...driver, 2 hybrids and 7 irons.

  2. Talk it over with a golf professional - They know how to fit you and can advise the perfect club for your swing.  Everybody will give some advice on what works for them, but it may not work at all for you.  It may cost a little more, but the value is getting the right thing the first time, not buying multiple sets of cheap clubs.  Bad clubs are like an uncomfortable pair of shoes, the more you use them the more you regret not getting the ones that suit you.  Also, leave your ego at the door, most people think they are long ball hitters and try to get the stiffest shaft out there, but you will find, that most people actually require a more flexible shaft and can hit the ball further with a flex shaft.  Listen to the advice he gives you, but be aware you can always get a second opinion if you don't feel it is correct.

  3. You can't go wrong getting a cheap full set of used clubs. But since you have some experience in your past, I fear you may outgrow a cheap set of used clubs too quickly and end up wasting some money in the process.

Of course, you probably don't know what you want or need and might end up wasting MORE money on a better set or any new clubs.

At this point, I think the best thing to do is just get a club in your hand. If you can borrow some from a friend or co-worker, that would probably be the best situation.

I'd suggest subscribing to a couple online discount golf shops' email newsletters, so you can get a sense of the going rates and popular brands. I'd suggest http://rockbottomgolf.com off the top of my head, you can probably find three or four others with a quick search.

  4. I would recommend going to Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith shops and look through the used clubs.  That way you can get a top of the line model at a greatly reduced price.  Fitting is very helpful, but may be overkill since you are just starting out.  Unless your arms are very long, or very short for your body standard length clubs will work just fine.
