Okay, So I'm a 16-year-old girl [if that helps at all]. I'm set on re-decorating my room in black, white, and red. I want an edgy/funky/mod room with a sophisticated atmosphere. I'm painting the walls red. I have a fairly large room [if that makes a difference]. I was thinking of maybe putting some black & white zebra print in the room somewhere, but SUBTLY [i'm not that girly]. I have a black butterfly-ish [i actually think it's more a pod] chair... I don't know what my budget it at the moment, but I'm working with the furniture I already have... I'm switching bed frames with my younger brother [my parents said I can paint the frame of his bed black]. Problem is, with the new bed, I lose 3 clothes drawers, and I don't have a closet in my room. I do have drawers, but they don't fit all my clothes. For the new room, I need bookshelves, lighting, bed sets, paint, posters and whatnot, et cetera. My desk and my drawers are brown though, and there's no way in h**l my parents will

  1. If you are going to spend money, and you have a large room, invest in a portable closet or armoire.  You NEED some place to hang up your clothes in addition to drawers.

I would also look in second-hand stores for a chest of drawers that you can paint.  Just make sure it is well made, then you can decorate it as you choose.

Remember, in any room, ample storage is an absolute necessity.  Additionally, any sophisticated room is minimalist, and uncluttered. Look to second-hand stores for posters, etc. for economical decorating.

  2. Have you already painted the room red? Because just my feeling, but red will hurt your eyes to look at all the time and will not create a relaxing atmosphere like  a bedroom should ideally have. If it were me, I would prefer a white room, because then you could do more with the accessories and if you decide you don't like it it will be much easier to change. I painted a room dark plum red a while ago and it was fun at first but after a while it was very depressing. But if you're set on it.... Ikea would probably be the best place to look for cheap shelving units and other furniture since you can't spend a lot. Target usually has graphic black and white bedding options, so go to the website and look at what they offer. They also have good lighting options.  Allposters.com should have some Audrey Hepburn stuff, and I believe I've also seen framed Audrey Hepburn photos at stores like Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, and World Market. I'd say you should keep it simple with most things being black or white, and add variation by using a lot of different textures (silk, cotton, wicker or woven materials, velvets, etc.) Then you can have throw pillows in red (silk maybe?) and add red accessories.

If you wanted a little bit more sophisticated of a look, you could do black and white with a different accent color - blue, green, purple, yellow. It would be less predictable than red and more mature, while also being softer on the eyes. And you could still throw in a couple red accessories if you love red. You would create the same general glamorous feel without it being over the top. Good luck!
