Marilyn has three cats: Tiggy, Fluffball, and Boots. She wants to know which brand of cat food they like

the best. For one week, she feeds Brand A to Tiggy, Brand B to Fluffball, and Brand C to Boots. More of

Brand C is eaten that week so Marilyn decides that Brand C must be the best. Was Marilyn’s experiment

fair? Why or why not?

Now re-design this experiment so that it fits the Scientific Method (Scientific Inquiry). The idea is to

have an experiment that could provide reliable data. Identify the manipulated and responding

variables. What are the experimental controls that should be considered? Type the answer in the

form of a paragraph.

  1. Rotate the brands and go two more weeks, so that each cat gets to eat each kind.  Scientifically, you can't conclude anything from the experiment as it stands now.  Boots might just be a heavy eater.

By "manipulated" and "responding" variables, I suppose you are talking about independent and dependent variables, respectively.  Your control of the kind of cat food each cat gets is the manipulated variable.  The amount of food each cat eats is the responding variable.
