Re-enter from Mexico with an expired visa?

My I-20 has expired in this January and I have to go back to my home country (Japan) by the end of next week, before my grace period ends. I was planning to go back home this week but I could not book the airline ticket so I decided to go home at the end of this month.

I would like to know whether if there is any problem if I go to Mexico and re-enter US and staying in US until the end of this month. Japan and US has the treaty so I don’t need to obtain travel visa to enter US if I’m staying here less than 90 days.

BTW, I’m planning to enter Mexico on foot at the Brownsville, TX border.

Thanks
