Re-finishing a guitar.?

How would i go about refinishing my guitar? Would it affect the guitar's sound in any way?

  1. It might marginally affect the acoustics, but if you finish it consistently with the original manufacture, it will be minimal.

    That's going to be a WHOLE lot of work though, and you'll need some specialized equipment.  You'll have to carefully sand it to bare wood (possibly veneer, so don't sand too much).  Then stain it however you like and paint the details.  Here's where it gets tricky though.  You'll need to block off the opening, hang it, and lacquer it with many very thin coats of a high-grade lacquer.  You'll need to apply it with a HPLV spray gun, or you'll get an uneven application on such a complex set of curves.  So if you don't have a HPLV setup (air compressor, air/water separator, HPLV gun, clean room, etc.) it's probably not going to be a satisfying result.
