Re global warming, Are the permafrost areas of Russia and Canada melting?

The site contains some interesting information about permafrost.

If the permafrost areas are melting existing towns and cities may have to be abandoned because the piles they're built on are driven into permafrost that will become soft ground. The buildings will subside and collapse. By this time many areas will have become permanently flooded and will not be habitable. Remaining areas will be habitable and towns above the flooded areas will be rebuilt at massive cost.

think so, but in the russia area i think they are mainly peat bogs underneath so maybe settling there might not be a fab idea

also there will be a lot of earth movement for awhile, so house building will be more difficult

Climate Change not Global warming. Global Warming, It does not exist! It is all a con, there is no evidence that sea levels are 'rising'. Organisations like 'Friends of the Earth' and 'Greenpeace' are brainwashing these generations into thinking global warming is a serious matter and needs to be 'stopped'. However, there is no other side to the story being teached.

Climate change is a natural phenomenon which the Earth has been undergoing for thousands of millions of years!! It is going to happen in the future and there is nothing we humans can do about it! Worry about more serious things and enjoy your short life without thinking about this so called 'global warming'!!

People think humans are the cause to global warming and climate change, however the principle of humans trying to stop this vast process is about as useless as trying to stop the tide from coming in.

The guy a couple of answers above me; 'Confuzzled' is correct. I agree with his view strongly. All of his statements are perfectly true and logical and like he said, more greenhouse gases are produced from the sea, volanoes, and natural decomposition than anything./

Yes, the permafrost is melting.  You would have to apply to the governments that you're inquiring about.  They do say that the melting permafrost is making for unsteady ground and that it is releasing so much methane that it will probably be very dangerous in those areas.

For the people who say there is no global warming, you should get your information from places like the USGS and not from some psychotic preacher who knows nothing but what he reads in the bible.

Sadly dr jello is incorrect Arctic sea is (as of 8 may) about the same as 8 May 2007 inspite of the cold winter.

And is "ice is still gaining" No, it has been declining steadily since the start of March. Considering last year was the smallest ice area on record, that dosen't bode well for the coming summer.

(third link) Was this years ice the record deniers claim, yes it is, with the help of the cold winter it is the biggest sea ice area since way back in 2005, wow so long ago!

Of course all the years before this going back to 1978 are larger.

No - Last year the fanatics were running around saying that the permafrost would melt releasing massive amounts of co2 causing a "positive feedback" that would cause even the ice cubes in your freezer to melt.  

This winter the ice levels are greater than average, it's winter, ice is still gaining.

we are a blip on the backside of the Earth, do you really think if the Earth decided to 'hiccup' we'd still be here? Our influence is nothing to the Earth, it recycles everything itself. What we are doing is messing in our own nest....and I agree with that...but as for the Global warming malarky..ppppffftt. More greenhouse gasses are produced by the ocean than anything and volcanoes too! Us..humans...we are like ants on a sandwich...one good whallop from Earth and it's problem would be solved!

This global warming is slowly being proved wrong..we are ACTUALLY in the middle of an ice age according to LATEST evidence!

Truth is..we don't know...and truth is...cycles go on around the world without us here or with us here...as for Russia and Canada...yeah it is..but it is NOT because of us..it is more likely to be because of NATURAL processes!! Core samples show the ups and downs of temperatures, ice caps etc are NORMAL. AUSTRALIA was covered in ice millions of years ago...there were no humans around then...so what caused the global warming then?? Dinosaur gas????

Yes, the permafrost is quickly yeilding to the warmth. It is a fact that all across Aaska, telephone poles are falling over, because they were never sunk deep enough to deal with the softened upper soil.
