Question:

Re-learning guitar strumming question

I finally picked my guitar up again after more than a year of not playing. All I ever played before now anyhow was just tabs. Now I want to learn more chords and strum patterns. I have been working on strum patterns, but I'm trying to learn a song, and the music to it I can't hear the guitar well enough to hear their strum pattern, so I kind of came up with my own. And when I play along with the song, it sounds good. But my problem is that if I try to sing or even hum the song and play, I get the first few beats out ok, but then it all turns into just an up/down motion that sounds like it's my first day to even hold a guitar. Is this something I can get past so I can play and sing the song at the same time? How can I get past it?
