Question:

Re - nuclear waste, do you mind having it in your back yard?

By having nuclear waste dumping grounds in your backyard, the government say that more jobs will be created, they may even reduce your council tax (woo hoo). AND, being as your children and cats and dogs may 'glow' in the dark, it would reduce your energy bill because you could switch a few more lights off!

Are you a 'not in my back yard' (NIMBY)! Or would you welcome gamma rays bouncing off a hillside near you for the next 10,000 years?

  1. What other alternatives are there? Nuclear is not desirable but unless we humans are prepared to makes sacrifices in the home and living the good life there will be no  oil or gas to fuel our homes.

We have to put our trust in the powers to be to get us out of this big hole we have dug for ourselves. And the way I see nuclear is a necessary evil. All we can do is hope and pray that there is another Eistein out there who can come up with a safe solution for storage.

Nuclear will never go away as this is a by product of our own planet. And it is being returned from whence it came to the ground.

What is more frightening on the short term are the potential health hazards associated with all these incinerators springing up everywhere.

I live in area where they is a huge power station, gas and oil green field sites and the pipelines from the Forties gas field

all in a radius of 20 miles of my home and you think you will have problems. We aslo have low nuclear waste and a storage of asbestos no one knew about until I went to an environmental meeting last week. The local council sneaked this passed the eyes of the public it's an utter disgrace that they were allowed to apply for retrospective planning permission.

What about those people living in distance of the Grangemouth Oil refinery and chemical plants at Middlesborough and Nuclear power stations all over the country.

No not on your door step just everyone elses but not yours eh!

  2. A conventional nuclear power plant is not cost effective when you consider the waste material and the cost of mining uranium. Many native American Indians have lost their lives digging the yellow powder. There are containers of nuclear waste that has been leaking for decades on the Hanford Reservation in Washington State.

Good ol' McCain wants to put 30 nucl'r power plants in the US. Investors will be protected by the benevolent government as usual.

Munitions manufacturers can obtain depleted uranium for free. It is used in ammo because it has a very high density and burns through targets. Sadly, US soldiers are not properly trained about the dangers of  depleted uranium that has been vaporized. Tiny particles can enter your system through your lungs and cause ongoing damage for the rest of your life. Cancer rates and birth defects have been increasing in Iraq and for our soldiers, but there is official denial.

I've personally known of unreported serious safety violations at well-run nuclear power plants. Most problems go unreported. These are easy targets for terrorists and a long-term environmental disaster.

My answer: Not on my planet.

  3. Mmmm, I'm not keen on having that sort o' stuff in my garden!! Isn't that what we pay all our taxes for??- to have the folk in the know do the right thing?? If our family were to "glow in the dark" , I would get the heebeegeebees if I spotted my mum withoot her false teeth, heading tae the bathroom in the middle o' the night!!!!

  4. not in my back yard

  5. If the government and local councils agree to this between them, it is only fair that nuclear waste should be buried beneath the houses of parliament and under each town hall. This will show us peasants just how safe it is !

  6. You got a point but I still wouldn't want to SEE that in my backyard.

  7. i think it's cool

but they should never have used nuclear in the first place, everyone knows creating and harnessing the power of a miniature star would be much safer and produce no waste!

  8. As long as any one in my family does not get cancer from the radiation
