Question:

Re-usable water bottles?

I drink a LOT of water! I go through anywhere between 3 - 10 16oz waterbottles per day! I DO recycle all of these bottles of course but obviously its not very "GREEN" to be using so much plastic!

I'm always running around and dont always have a sink near me, so I do like to keep cold water near by. For some time now, I've wanted to buy a re-usable water bottle but I'm kind of scared to do so! I always hear about re-calls or plastic warnings..etc...

Any brands somebody can suggest for a SAFE re-usable waterbottle? I need something that is not glass becuase I work around children.

  1. SIGG bottles at www.reusablebags.com

  2. I have these 18 oz aluminum bottles made by elements energy drink.  The drink is nasty but I give them to folks and use the cleaned empties for ready water bottles.  AL I believe is safe for this use.  I use canvas tape clearly marked water around the midsection of the can/bottle.  Work great.

If you want you could give the kids the energy drinks first...

  3. Don't Buy A Nalgene Water Bottle Until You Read This -

Many Nalgene water bottles and other hard plastic sport water bottles are made of polycarbonate (#7 on the bottom) , which may leach Bisphenol A, an estrogen-like chemical. Canada is considering a ban of products containing Bisphenol A (BPA) and a new American study links it to breast cancer and early puberty, and is particularly concerned about the effect on babies. Others have raised concerns about the effect of feminizing hormones on men, such as breast enlargement or dropping s***n counts. At the same time, sport water bottles are ubiquitous and we don't want people going back to buying bottled water. What should you do? Read the article at the link provided...

  4. First of all, great job realizing you need to cut back on water bottle usage.  But, what you might not realize is that the plastic in those water bottles is probably more harmful than a lot of reusable water bottles.  So, you'll definitely want to switch.  Do a web search for a compound called bisphenol A or BPA.  You'll find out that it's in a lot of hard, clear plastic items.  Anything with the recycle number 7 on the bottom most likely has BPA in it, so you'll want to stay away from those.  Try to stick to things that have a 1 or a 2 on the bottom.  But, if you really want to do it good, forget plastic alotgether.  Try this website: http://www.kleankanteen.com/.  They're non-plastic reusable bottles that are better for you and better for the environment.  There are also a lot more eco-friendly products and you'll be able to find them doing a BPA web search.

EDIT:  Here's another site I found with a good comparison of some BPA-free bottles: http://walking.about.com/od/prpack/tp/bp...

  5. Why not use a cyclists water bottle?

These are made of heavier plastic, I've had mine for years.

  6. Nalgene, they're great! They're very durable, not that much money, and have a very wide range of sizes and shapes.

And they are working with Brita water filter right now for this great program filter for good. Hope this was helpful.

  7. Good to hear that you drink lots of water.  I have been doing that myself ever since i had a mushroom trip back in 2000 when a leprachaun was getting on my case about not drinking enough water.

Americans going through millions and millions of plastic water bottles a day is a relatively new thing.  Though many people recycle, not everyone does.  They are adding up and assisting in filling up landfills.  From what I understand, aluminium is the way to go as they last forever and aren't prone to developing bacterias as easily as plastic.  Thanks for reminding me to pick up one.  I usually just buy a case of plastic water bottles from Costco and try my best to refill them.

  8. I threw away all my Nalgene water bottles and bought a rubbermaid 32 oz. refillable bottle at Target and i love it.
