How does sodium metabisulphate neutralize sodium hypochlorite?

  1. I would not expect a neutralization reaction in the sense of a base-acid reaction, rather than a redox one.

    HOCl is a very strong oxidizing agent and the oxidizing potential might be strong enough to oxidize the SO2 and the sulfit formed from meta-bisulphate in aqueous solutions to sulfate, while it is reduced to chlorid itself.
