yesterday in my horse's armpit area i noticed a small lump (about dime sized) leaking clear yellow liquid. the liquid had hardened so i picked it off and can see a small pink bald spot where it looks like something bit him. my barn owner said it looked like a horsefly bite (from one of those HUGE black ones maybe) This morning i checked it and now its really big...like golf ball size and its not discharging anymore. its kind of hard to the touch. Ive never seen this happen before has it happened to anybody else? im getting concerned. im going to check on it again in a few hours... and if its worse im definitly calling my vet. do i have reason to be worried at all or is this a common sign of a reaction?

  1. CALL THE VET!

  2. I have a 4yr old arabian and he had a little lump on the inside of his leg (marble size). I made an appointment with the vet but 2 days later when he arrived and squeezed it = golf ball size. But puss came out, we tried a cream Socatyl (German) and it didn't help, i am now giving him an antibiotic suspension 2 a day.

You need to call the vet.

I think it was caused by a horse fly but it won't go away by itself.

My horse didn't take kindly to the syringe so I mix the antibiotics into his muesli and give him a little portion in the morning and the evening. If it is not better by next Monday I am calling the vet again.

My arabian is covered with lumps and bumps so I suspect he just reacts more to the bug bites than the Haflinger ponies he is on the pasture with.

    Good luck!

  3. could very well be just a bug bite.

but i wouldn't take any chances. if it's bigger, or changing color, have him looked at.

    hope he's ok.

  4. It sounds more like a splinter to me. Did you check it to see if there's anything in the wound?

You should probably call the vet anyway. We had a horse who we thought had a cut in the same place you're describing. We treated it for a few days and it was still huge and swollen. Took her in and it ended up being a really deep puncture wound that we couldn't even see b/c it had already closed up on the outer layer. We had to do antibiotics and cleaning treatments for weeks.
