  1. Are you looking at the UK or Europe in general.

If the UK try getting hold of a copy of 'The Cambridge Companion to Medieval English Theatre' (Cambridge University Press 1994)

The Medieval European Stage, William Tydeman (Cambridge University Press 2001)

Most of the theatre at this stage grew out of religious pagents where a parade with floats reflected themes from the Passion of Christ (Easter being the main Christian Festival adn not Christmas) Gradually over time these pagents developed into theatre. Out of these pagents strolling players emerged taking religious plays on the road.

You might also consider researching the origins of Commedia dell 'Arte, which emerged at the end of the 15th Century...their origins are in the strolling players of ancient Rome and a tradition of bawdy street performance. However, these were frowned on by a now Catholic Europe....theatre had a bad reputation for an association with prostitution and so all but disappeared.
