  1. L = 3W - 4

    88 = 2(3W -4) + 2W

    88 = 6W - 8 + 2W

    88 = 8W - 8

    96 = 8W

    W =12 cm

    L = 3(12) - 4 = 32 cm

  2. 88 = 2w + 2l

    l = 3w-4

    88 = 2w+2(3w-4)

    88 = 2w+6w-8

    96=8w

    w=12

    88=2(12)+2l

    88=24+2l

    64=2l

    l=32

  3. Let L = length and W = width

    Since the length is 4 less than 3 times the width

    L = 3W - 4

    Perimeter = 2L + 2W = 88

    So, we take our two equations and solve

    L = 3W - 4 and 2L + 2W = 88

    Plug the first equation into the second equation

    2(3W - 4) + 2W = 88

    Distribute

    6W - 8 + 2W = 88

    Collect like W terms

    8W - 8 = 88

    Add 8 to both sides

    8W = 96

    W = 12

    Since L = 3W - 4

    L = 3(12) - 4 = 36 - 4 = 32

    Answer: Width = 12, Length = 32
