And yet, with Amber Hands --

She leads Him -- docile as a Boy --

Along appointed Sands --

He never misses a Degree --

Obedient to Her Eye

He comes just so far -- toward the Town --

Just so far -- goes away --

Oh, Signor, Thine, the Amber Hand --

And mine -- the distant Sea --

Obedient to the least command

Thine eye impose on me --

  1. "Hi!"

    "C"

  2. c

  3. Although the answer is probably `C,' this ought to be a trick question.

If you read the first stanza, you will see that the poet is talking about a mother/son relationship involving the personified moon's hands, and in the second, more distantly, her Eye.  In the third stanza the poet perversely casts the man as the mother/moon, saying, `Oh, Signor, Thine, the Amber Hand,' and herself as the boy: `And mine-- the distant Sea.'  This is not an obscure case of synecdoche (part/whole): her hand is the sea does not obscurely mean she is the sea herself.

This poem relies on the tension of the flipped gender, the contrast between the evolving mother/son versus the more stable husband/wife relationship, the sea's ambivalence to actually visiting the Town, and the poet's own ambivalence about being, actually, the Sea, to represent a measure of distance in the relationship depicted in this poem.

  4. c obviously

It's interesting that there's no indication that the beloved returns any affection.

By the way, her last name has no "e" in it: Dickinson.

  5. The poem is describing the effect of the moon on the tides, it is a metaphor for C. a loved one and the speaker.

  6. d i think
