  1. Try using a text highlighter.  You can make one yourself, all it is a colored (orange or yellow works best) transparent strip as wide as the text.  This will help words "pop out" a bit more.  I had a 4th grade student and this worked wonders in helping him read (he was a non-reader at the beginning of the year and was reading at a 2nd grade level by the end).

Also, try some writing exercises.  Writing out letters and words that are tricky can be really beneficial.  Practice letters and words with lots of p's, d's, q's, m's, and w's.  These are often the toughest for children that have dyslexia.

Try making the text enlarged a bit and bolded, it may help with the visual clarity of the letters/words.

A good way to measure progress of the reader is to have them read for 1 minute and then count the number of words correct that they read within that minute.  Just make sure the material you are giving is at an appropriate level for the child.  You can also do this with letters,  have a series of letters written and time for 1 minute and count the number of correct letters.

  2. Breaking down words and sounding them out, i.e.  Restaurant (Rest-er-ront).  Most people with dyslexia have problems reading words over 4 letters.
