  1. You should read with her for 20 minutes every day.

  2. It's a shame that your point system may draw someone. I'm answering just because my kids and I all love to read. My two youngest were reading before they were 3. What you're going to need is something to draw her attention. What worked for my kids was Dr.Seuss. Hop on Pop was the first book both read. It's fun because it rhymes. That will draw her attention. Just spend about 15-20 minutes twice a day with her and make it as much fun as possible. You'll notice results almost immediately! Give the 10 points to your little sister and twice that many to yourself for being involved in her education.GOOD LUCK!!!!

  3. Not all children are ready to read at the age of six.  It's most unfortunate that you and your family feel such pressure.  Read to your sister and have fun.  She will learn to read when her brain is ready.

  4. you need to get little word books and have her point at the words that she reads do this for an half hour aday she will come to

  5. This is more than a spring break project..You need to dedicate the next few months with her to help her read! If she's not learning in school she needs to learn phonetically! which means you need to teach her how to spell and read by using the sounds of the letters instead of through memory like they teach at school! Good luck! It can take sometime...but drowning her over springbreak with reading, is only going to frustrate her and push her away! Another thing is..you should have her tested for dislexia because sometimes if a child can not learn through memory its a sign of dislexia. Good luck i wish you the best of luck!

  6. First, have you spoken to her teacher?  Meanwhile, go to a library or to a bookstore and ask them about reading books.  I taught my daughter how to read at 5 with the Bob books and other reading books.  She is now 11 and all she wants to do is read.

  7. You have to make it fun or it will probably not work. If she is stubborn, it will take some time. Start by making the abc's on color paper and make like a " hopscotch game" out of it. Then start putting the letters together & make words/ short sentences  etc..

  8. Honestly she has plenty of time to learn,I know a kid whostill doesnt know how to read and is in 5th grade. If you really are concerned talk to her teacher or ask for aferschool program at her school.or maybe tutoring?

  9. 1] Have her read [ age appropriate level ] aloud for one half hour in AM; andone half hour in PM.

She can read books, children's magazines, even comics - it is still reading!

2] Take her to the store and have her pick out a book about something she really likes [ animal, fav character, etc. ] and let her read that!

3] make sure she catches the rest of you reading - instead of TV, Videogames, computer games

4] read 'interesting ' things out loud to the rest of the family while reading news, homework, etc.

5] reward her with a prize for so many 1/2 hours of reading.

    a] daily [ 30 min ] - 30 min of TV, computer, video

b] weekly [ 3 hours of reading ] one hour at park, or wherever she likes to go

c] monthly - a big girl treat - a manicure or pedicure, anew top or toy, etc.

  10. Well they recommend that you read with a child for at least 15 minutes a night.. But I am guessing since she is far behind you might want to try at least an hour with her.. if you do to much she wont want to read at all! so you have to be cautious of yah go about this.

You should have your parents talk to her teacher and have her recommend some programs.

You can try FCRR.Org, this the website most teachers use, just click on the "for parents" link.

  11. I would start at the Library and get the books that are for beginner readers and emergent readers. I always keep lots of books in my house (even in the bathroom)

Start by reading with her then allow her to try to read the book to you. Books with pictures and words are great for beginner readers.

If you search on line you can find books that read with her on line. one of my daughter favorites was http://www.starfall.com

Does she know her ABC and the letter sounds. You can't learn to read without knowing the basics. You have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk. The website above teaches letter sounds too.

  12. It's ok that she's not, just spend time reading with her daily, for 30 min a day. Try books she will like and read the same one over and over again like Green Eggs and Ham or other Dr. Suess.

Realize you will not catch her up over spring break - reading is a life long thing and over time you will notice an improvement. The important thing is you are spending the time showing her reading is fun and getting her interested in reading! She will do the rest from there.

The other thing that worked really well for our son was working on phonics games with him - you can get a cheap phonics system game on ebay for under 10.00. We got a book of games, and they all focused on different word families, we played them with him 3 times weekly, and they were fun, and he didn't realize he was learning!

Another trick I found that worked was making him spell things before we gave it to him. For example if he wanted milk, I would ask him how to spell it and he would try - if he didn't get it, then we would spell it together.
