Ok well im not that really good at reading poems.

Can you gimme tips and stuff.

This was one of the poems i was gonna read to class its so easy-but for some reason i cant read it well.

I, too, sing America.I am the darker brother.

They send me to eat in the kitchen

When company comes,

But I laugh,

And eat well,

And grow strong.Tomorrow,

I'll be at the table

When company comes.

Nobody'll dare

Say to me,

"Eat in the kitchen,"

Then.Besides,They'll see how beautiful I am

And be ashamed--I, too, am America.

  1. really you ought to leave it alone just when you read it start out the first line soft then angry until (but i laugh ) then mellow until(tomorrow) then forceful until (ashamed) then(I too am America) proudly

What you have will be completed by your delivery

  2. Black is beautiful.

Everyone deserves a place at the table.

It's wrong to make some people eat in the kitchen.

Those who eat there today, eat well and grow strong

Tomorrow they'll be at the table too when company comes.

Nobody will dare say, "Go eat in the kitchen."

Besides they'll see how beautiful I am,

And be ashamed because I'm America too.

Read the poem in a mirror.  Get the feeling of the words.  Convince yourself, then you'll speak strongly enough to convince others.  Try singing the first line.  Think of having your pick of all the fine foods served to company before it ever leaves the kitchen.  Laugh at those who make you eat there. You 're strong enough to demand your place at table when company comes.  You are beautiful and you belong.

  3. My best suggestion for you is to read it and keep reading it until you feel this poem in your soul.  This is a poem of strength and the will to overcome racial barriers.  As soon as you can feel this poem, you will be able to read it with your voice the way you feel it should be read.

I don't know if this will help, but this is how I hear it:

All caps indicate emphasis on the word...not loud, just strong.

(short pause)...no more than one second

Longer lines read at a normal pace and tone

    I, TOO, sing America...(short pause)

I AM...(short pause)  the darker brother.

They send me to eat in the kitchen when company comes,

    But I LAUGH,

    And EAT WELL,

    And GROW STRONG.

    Tomorrow...(short pause)

I'll be at the table when company comes.

Nobody'll dare  SAY TO ME,...(short pause)

    "Eat in the kitchen," Then.

Besides,They'll see how beautiful I am and be ashamed--

    I, TOO, am America.

  4. I too, SING, America.  I AM ...the DARKER... brother.

They send me to eat in the KITCHEN...when company comes.

    But I LAUGH (hahahaha)...and EAT well...AND...grow STRONG.

Tomorrow...I'll be AT the table, when company comes.

Nobody'll DARE  say to me  "Eat in the kitchen THEN...

BESIDES...They'll all see how BEAUTIFUL...  AM.

    AND...be aSHAMED...I TOO...AM ...America.
