Question:

Reading and Comprehension

My son will be starting Sixth Grade this fall and he does well on all academics but reading and comprehension.

He doesn't like reading. Its always a problem getting him to read and when you get him to read you really don't know if he did or not.

Any ideas on how to help my son improve in this area.

Thanks

  1. Figure out what he's really interested in (they always have *something* they're really focused on at that age) and find some reading-level-appropriate books on it. Read them first, then set aside time specifically for him to read and try to encourage it. Casually quiz him about the content of the book from time to time, ask if he's still interested in the topic, etc.
