Reading incompatable disk

Question

we replaced our hp laptop model ze1230 with an acer desktop. We transferred all of our pictures onto cd, but to burn a disk and open it on another computer you had to "make compatible." We have many disks that we didn't do that to have no power cord to start up the old notebook and need those pictures. Any solution other than buying a new power cord?
