What are your thoughts/ideas about the use of a cd/book playback system as a reading strategy for children with learning disabilities. I was thinking using a playback system/bookmarking/slow aduio capability system for text books on tape. I have about 6 SDC children placed in a general ed classroom and need to make this a part of the daily plan but I'm having doubts that this will work with the stronger readers in my class... What do you think would work as a strategy for all of this kids using this system? (high school btw) Any adaptations you could rec for me!!!!! Please help! Thanks.

  1. You'll find plenty of ideas at a free site put together by teachers for teachers at www.alternativeeducationbible.com

  2. You can use it either with the whole group or in small groups.  Either way, you would run it like a literature circle.  Everyone would have a job (discussion leader, etc.) and the jobs should rotate daily.

You'll need to introduce the book.  Once students are in to it, they can take turns introducing the next chapter. Students then engage in individual notetaking/questioning as they listen to the tape/cd.  Allow time at the end of each class for discussion and clarification within the group and with you.

Don't forget that one of the tasks they should practice every day are the reading strategies good readers know (i.e., rereading, close vocabulary, making predictions, etc.).  Try to work that into the groups' daily routine, and have them practice each one for two or three days.

  3. I do that all the time.  Don't worry about the stronger readers; they will always read ahead and finish before anyone regardless.  That means they get reinforcement because when they've finished the FIRST time, they will hear what's left the second time as you play it on the CD.  It's a great way to teach novels and most literature books come with audio versions of every selection as well.  You can use those for re-inforcement (if the students have a resource/study hall, you can give them to that teacher).
