Question:

Reading thrillers and suspense novels during pregnancy?

I usually read thriller and medical suspense novels but since I got pregnant I have tried to stay away from those types of books and have been reading a lot of chick lit. Both my favorite authors just came out with new paperbacks and I am dying to read them but I am a little worried that reading thrillers and suspense novels might not be good for the baby. My mother told me a while ago that it is not good to read those types of books while pregnant. Does anyone agree with her? Or is this just another old wives tale? Do you think I should wait until after I have the baby to start reading these types of novels? I am 32 weeks and the authors are Tess Gerristen and Karin Slaughter.

  1. That made me smile...thanks...I think it's safe to read what you like x

  2. I have never heard that before. I read all kinds of thrillers and suspense novels with both my pregnancies. Now I will say you should steer clear of Janet Evonavich, The Stephanie Plum series While pregnant. You have a greater risk of peeing your pants her books are so funny.  :) Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy all the books you want.

  3. I think its an Old Wives Tale.  Its not bad for your baby at all.  Some people believe about passing negative energies and stuff like that and i do to a certain extent but just because you are reading a thriller does not mean you will distress or give your baby negetive signals.  Read your books and enjoy yourself.  If thats gonna help you relax its only gonna be good for your baby cos she/he will relax too.

  4. Read what you enjoy!  Read it outloud if you like.  It won't do baby the slightest harm.

(And keep reading often after baby arrives. Modeling reading for your children is a great way to help them discover that reading for pleasure is a delight.)

  5. I'd say it's definitely safe at 32 weeks. You could get real antsy, nervous, etc while reading them which is probably why people might think it's a problem. You'll be fine... and so will your baby! :)
