After a hiatus of two years, Real Betis have returned to La Liga. Championing Segunda Division is a different proposition altogether compared to La Liga glory, and Seville-based football club are well aware of the ground realities. Coach Pepe Mel has brought
Betis back to Spain’s top flight and will do his utmost to ensure safety in their first year back.
Betis were relegated in the 1999/00 season but returned the very next term. First half of the previous decade brought much joy as they managed top half finishes. It was in the second half of the decade that the Verdiblancos embarked on a poor run of form.
While they avoided relegation thanks to their last ditch efforts, the performances showed little improvement. With Barcelona winning La Liga in 2008/09 season, after a two-year trophy draught, Real Betis saw a different change in their fortunes; Segunda Division
awaited them.
A host of players from reserve team have been promoted to first team duties, while Betis backroom is busy scouring bargains for the club. Betis were the top scorers in Segunda Division with 85 strikes but taking on La Liga defences would be easier said than
done. The Verdiblancos had one of the best defensive records in the league. In the Spanish to flight, however, their resistance would be severely tested.
Real Betis will play against quality oppositions, with squads lined up with international stars. Most minor of the mistakes would be severely punished. UD Almeria learnt this lesson the hard way as they became the whopping boys of La Liga. In their preparation
for top flight campaign, Betis have added five new faces to the squad.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javi-Chica-c18015 joins the Seville-based club from Catalan outfit, Espanyol, on a free transfer. The versatile stopper can play on either flank, but prefers the right one. While he is not the most gifted of players technically, Chica uses his physique to good
effect. The 26-year-old brings to Betis a wealth of European experience and his addition should be fruitful for his new owners.
The backline is further strengthened by the arrival of Getafe’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pedro-c29582 “Mario” Abrante. A graduate of the Atletico Madrid youth academy, the 29-year-old has played at the highest level with Barcelona and Valladolid. Mario’s career has been plagued with injuries
and Pepe Mel will be hoping he can stay injury free.
Current number one, Inaki Goitia, will have competition from new arrival, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabri-c13206. The 23-year-old Spaniard was on loan at Recreativo Huelva last season and was a first team regular. He will be looking to establish himself and continue his development, which
kick started again following years of obscurity at Deportivo la Coruna.
Joining Juanma and Arzu in the middle is former Villarreal academy graduate, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Matilla-c18072. The Quero-born player failed to establish himself at Villarreal in the past two seasons and lands at Sevilla to fulfil his footballing potential. The 22-year-old
Matilla is joined by Ecudorian winger, Jefferson http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Montero-c26784, from Villarreal. Jefferson arrives on a loan deal, which can be made permanent at the end of the season for 300,000 Euros.
With a rich mix of youth and experience, Betis will look to establish themselves in the Spanish top division. They have signed players who want to make it big in La Liga and this will spur them on in achieving what they have set their hearts at – league
safety.
