Question:

Real Chinese Food - do you like it?

I think everybody likes the salty Chinese food you eat at take out places and buffets or even fine dinning places like PF Changs, but have you ever had real Chinese? I ate a Chinese food place in Chinatown when I was in California and it was so odd I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. The sticky rice in a grape leaf was kind of normal, the steamed dumplings were good, but the other mystery dishes were almost more than I could stomach. I didn't know what to think about their frosting either. It wasn't sweet at all, I think it's made like ours, but instead of lard and sugar, I think it's lard and rice flour.

  1. I've been privileged to have had Chinese food cooked by Chinese cooks a few times. I have found this food to be very good indeed. It is much different from the 'American-Sino' stuffy wuffy we get here.

  2. I am a Chinese, I live in Hong Kong and Beijing therefore, I have different kinds of real Chinese food very often, of course, I like it.

Good food is prepared by fresh / good ingredients.  My suggestion to you is : to explore some authentic Chinese restaurants - Shanghainese, Szechuan, Cantonese, Pekingnese, Chiu chow,  ... etc., then you would know more about Chinese food.  By the way, the wrapper of the sticky rice is lotus leave.  I guess you were in a Cantonese Restaurant and had some dim sum dishes.

  3. Yes I love all Asian food

  4. I may have tried a while back. Yeah it is kind of odd. I wonder if it more healthy for you. Probably. I kind of getting over the fake Chinese food. It seems kind of too salty.

  5. omg. Chinese food is the best, then again, I am biased because I AM Chinese.

But i have to admit, you just have to know what to eat.

  6. I do like some real Chinese food, but sometimes have issues with some of the seafood dishes.  That's just because I didn't grow up eating seafood at all, so I get a little squeamish around it.

My advice is to try it again.  Sometimes things taste totally different the second time you try it.

  7. What I've tried I've really liked, but you're right its pretty different from the take away style dishes we are used to.

  8. To me it is all about personal preferences, and marketing as well. I found some tasty dishes, and some less tasty, healthy and unhealthy, and so on... But, I found the same in many other, less known ethnic cuisines with virtualy no marketing. Even tastier... to my preferences.

At least from me any shorter answer would be generalization.

  9. nope im allergic

  10. h**l yes i love it. my grandma used to cook it all the time. she was half Laotian. the last time i had "real" Chinese food was 9 years ago. man i miss it so much. also PF Chang is not fine dinning. thats fake white people Chinese food.

  11. Hmmm. What kind of Chinese?

China has numerous ethnic groups within her borders, and due to varying terrain, growing conditions, etc. has a variety of cuisines.

    Among them:

    Cantonese

    Haiinese

    Hakkonese

    Szechuan

    Hunan

So.... Yes there is a chance that you will find food that you enjoy or do not enjoy.

Myself I enjoy Szechuan cuisine, not all of it but some of it?

And yes PF Changs is not even close to what real Chinese cuisine is.
