Real Madrid winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, has expressed his delight on equalling Hugo Sanchez and Telmo Zarra’s record of 38 goals in a league campaign. He stated that he did not expect to score so many goals for the club this season and claimed that he was
honoured on reaching the milestone.
The Portuguese International has scored 38 goals in the Spanish La Liga this season, 51 goals in all competitions. He has equalled the record of Real Madrid legend, Hugo Sanchez, and Athletic Bilbao striker, Telmo Zarra, with the league game against UD Almeria
yet to be played this season.
The player was elated with his goal tally this season and said that he was overjoyed with the achievement. He insisted that it was a great victory over Villarreal at El Madrigal in a difficult away fixture.
“I am very happy about equalling Zarra and Hugo Sanchez's record. The truth is I didn't expect to score so many goals this year and I feel honoured to reach two legends like Zarra and Hugo Sanchez. What really matters is that we earned a great victory at
a complicated venue,” the winger was quoted as saying in an interview.
The former Manchester United player also admitted that he would love to score in Madrid’s last fixture against Almeria and break the record of most goals scored in the season at Santiago Berbnabeu.
“I would like to score even more goals against Almeria, but I'm not obsessed about it. I've tried to score from set pieces many times this year, but had been unlucky until now. I'm happy both on a personal and collective level because the entire team is
performing well. We play at a high level and score many goals. There may be nothing at stake for us any more, but Real Madrid always work hard to win,” he concluded.
