Real Madrid General Manager Jorge Valdano insists the team is complete; puts Rooney & Llorente rumours to rest
Jorge Valdano, the General Manager at Real Madrid, has applauded the performance of Madrid’s attack in their last game in the La Liga, and said that the performance was enough evidence to prove that his team does not need any more additions.
Manchester United’s unsettled striker Wayne Rooney has repeatedly been linked with Real Madrid, and there is immense speculation that Real may be considering a bid in January.
Valdano once again said that there are no plans to buy any players, and as Jose Mourinho had last week stated, he has what he wants and there are no plans of expanding the squad.
There were strong reports in the media that Manchester United may decide to make use of Rooney’s market value, and consider the Madrid bid in January. The current contract for Wayne Rooney expires at the end of next season, and in recent weeks the relationship between the player and his manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been the reason behind him being linked to a move away from Old Trafford.
Rooney, meanwhile, is not the only striker being linked to Real Madrid: there is also Fernando Llorente. The Athletic Bilbao striker is also believed to be on the shopping list for Madrid. However, Valdano was keener on pointing out the capable strikers his team has, rather than focusing on who they may or may not buy. The club director said that a team that has players like Argentine Gonzalo Higuain, the world’s best player Cristiano Ronaldo, the talented and speedy Angel Di Maria, one of the best left footers in Europe Mesut Ozil and the best French striker Karim Benzema, should not be needing any more firepower.
Valdano insisted on talking about his team, but he was put on the spot when he was repeatedly asked about Wayne Rooney. He once again referred back to his players, and said: "Madrid have two great strikers, Higuain and Cristiano, who already showed last season that they are capable of scoring 60 goals between them.
"As well as that there are Di Maria and Ozil, who are going to help these two goalscorers. The question is, who would we move aside if we signed another striker?"
Valdano said that it is not even a debate at the club, and all of this is just a rumour spread by the media. He reiterated that his manager Jose Mourinho has also assured him that his team is capable of winning the Spanish title and the UEFA Champions League.
The press were time and again reassured by Valdano that Madrid are not going to buy any more players, but the reporters persisted with the same line of questioning and once again put the question of Fernando Llorente to him. Valdano said that as a player, he is fantastic and no doubt one of the best in Spain. He added that right now there would be no room for him in the team, and it would be a waste to sign such a player. He went on to say that over the last couple of seasons Llorente has grown as a player, and maybe someday he may end up in a much bigger team, but it is not Madrid - that is for sure.
Currently, Real Madrid are unbeaten in all competitions this season and are atop the domestic league table, having won 5 out of 7 games. While in the UEFA Champions League Madrid have won both their games and are also on top in group ‘I’. Title rivals and defending champions Barcelona trail Madrid by just one point with 5 wins one draw and a loss.
