Real Madrid appeal Jose Mourinho’s five match European ban – La Liga news
Real Madrid have challenged UEFA’s decision to hand club manager, Jose Mourinho, with a five-match ban. The verdict was announced in the aftermath of the ill-tempered Champions League semi-final first leg clash between http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid and Barcelona. Following
his side’s defeat, Mourinho had accused European football’s governing body of favouring Barcelona.
The enigmatic Portuguese has a tendency to talk himself into trouble. But the outburst against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and UEFA was too much, even by his standards.
The source of his frustration was a questionable red card in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Barcelona.  The match at the Santiago Bernabeu was locked at 0-0, but http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-c29670’s sending off tipped the scales irreversibly
in Barcelona’s favour. The defender was shown a straight red card for a tackle on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dani-Alves-c9869, even though slow motion replays clearly showed that Pepe had not made contact with the Barca man.
The Catalans took full advantage of their man advantage, scoring two goals in the final quarter of the match to gain control of the tie. Barcelona would go on to secure their place in the final with a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the contest, though, Mourinho
had already admitted defeat long before that. After the match at the Bernabeu, the Portuguese conceded that his side had no chance of making it to the final, claiming that UEFA’s bias towards Barcelona ensures that no side can ever stand a chance of overcoming
the Spanish giants.
Mourinho had said, “Today it's clear that against Barcelona you have no chance. I don't understand why. I don't know if it's the publicity of UNICEF (the club's shirt sponsor), I don't know if it's the friendship of (Spanish football federation president
Angel Maria) Villar at UEFA, where he is vice-president, I don't know if it's because they are very nice, but they have got this power. The rest of us have no chance.”
For his comments, Mourinho was handed a five-match ban from European competitions. But Real Madrid are preparing to launch an appeal against the verdict.
A statement on UEFA’s website confirmed the move: “Real Madrid have appealed against the disciplinary verdict handed down to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on May 6, and relating to the UEFA Champions League semi-final
first leg between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Madrid on April 27. “
Real Madrid finished the 2010/11 La Liga season in second place and will look to redeem some pride when the season league commences in August this year.
