Real Madrid complete Mesut Ozil transfer; Yes to La Liga, No to Premier League
The big spending Spanish giants Real Madrid have finally got their hands on one of the most exciting players from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Germany’s Mesut Ozil has signed for the former Spanish Champions from German club Werder Bremen.
The young midfielder was one of the standout players in the World Cup for Germany. Soon after the World Cup, there was massive interest from clubs all over Europe. Manchester United and Barcelona were believed to be the clubs favourite to get his services, but it is Real Madrid who eventually won the race.
The deal is believed to worth 15 million Euros that is equivalent to 12.4 million pounds; he has one year left on his contract at Werder Bremen. The midfielder is expected to fly out to Madrid for a medical to complete the move. Real Madrid, on their website, announced the agreement with Werder Bremen and also praised the outstanding player for his vast qualities.
The statement on the Madrid webpage read that Ozil is a player with unique touch and is blessed with immaculate technique. He has excellent ball control and has the ability to make inch perfect passes from the midfield. The statement went on to say that he is one of the brightest young players in world football and the club is pleased to have attained his services.
Ozil is the 2nd player from the German team to make his way to Real Madrid. Earlier, his teammate Sami Khedira also signed for Real Madrid. Ozil joined Werder Bremen back in 2008 from Schalke and won the DFB-Pokal (Cup) and also advanced to the final edition of the UEFA Cup (Europa League) in 2009.
Werder Bremen’s director of Sport Klaus Allofs said that the club respects his decision to move to Madrid. He said that Ozil is a very talented player and it is natural for a player to want more and make the step up. Klaus said that the whole club wishes him all the best and also thanks him for his services for the club.
Ozil was also impressive while playing for the Under-21 Germany team; he also won the European Championship with them in 2009. The performances for the Under-21 team led to his debut for the senior team and made way for a berth in the World Cup squad. After making his International debut, he quickly established himself as one of the key components in the national team setup. Manager Joachim Loew also said that he realized his potential very early and made sure he made good use of the talented young midfielder. Loew said that he trusted him with responsibility in the World Cup and he was astonished because he performed better than he had expected. Ozil was shortlisted after the World Cup as one of the players of the tournament.
Apart from his tireless performance in middle of the park, his most telling contribution in the World Cup came when he scored a scorcher against Ghana in the final group game. Germany, after beating Australia in the first game, lost the 2nd match to Serbia and was looking for a win to make it to the next round. After struggling to get a goal for most of the match, it was Ozil who curled one in the top corner from outside the area to earn Germany a 1-0 win and made way for them to play England in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.
