Real Madrid defender Fernando Gago headed to Liverpool, agent confirms
Liverpool are currently favourites to sign http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Gago-c13652, the 25-year-old Real Madrid midfielder who has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Liverpool have been one of the most active Premier League sides in the summer transfer window so far, having already signed Sunderland midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102 for £16 million.
They now have their sights set on Gago, the Argentinean defensive midfielder who is set to make a move away after falling out of favour with Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.
In the 2010-2011 season, Gago went on to make only seven appearances, four in the La Liga and three in the Copa del Rey.
That was a step down from the previous seasons, where he had managed 42, 33 and 22 appearances in all competitions from his second season onward, respectively.
The defender is desperate for regular first team football, which is why he has decided to leave the Spanish giants.
The player’s agent confirmed that his client had entered talks with Liverpool and it was only matter of time before the deal was concluded.
Gago’s agent said while speaking to reporters:
“Gago needs to play and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 would be a perfect club for him, Fernando wants to get back on the pitch and return to the top level and at the moment that is not possible in Madrid.”
There has also been talk at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid about the player leaving, with Aston Villa and Liverpool both being cited as possible destinations.
A source close to the club revealed:
“http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-c13609 knows that he has no future at the club.
There has been interest in the past from some Italian clubs and Aston Villa, but Liverpool have shown the most interest.”
However, it seems highly unlikely that Gago will sign with Aston Villa. He is close to signing with the Reds, who are on a mission to strengthen their squad this summer.
Having finished at a disappointing sixth place finish in the English Premier League table last season, they are determined to return to winning ways.
Liverpool kick off their season against Sunderland at Anfield on 13th August, after which they will travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
