Real Madrid edge past Atletico Madrid 2-1 – La Liga update
Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in a derby clash at the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vicente-c36001 Calderon on Saturday.
The Los Blancos are placed second behind league leaders Barcelona and trail the Catalan giants by 5 points.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho made just one change from the side which defeated Olympique Lyon 3-0 in a recent fixture of UEFA Champions League. Lassana Diarra replaced Angel Di Maria in central midfield.
Atletico manager Quique Sanchez Flores brought in defender Alvaro Dominguez to replace Luiz Perea in the Atletico back line, just one change from the side that drew 2-2 with Almeria recently.
Real began the game in brisk fashion as only in the second minute striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Karim-Benzema-c20350 had his first sight at goal. However, the Frenchman fired a shot wide of Atletico’s goal.

Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Sami Khedira’s flick found Benzema inside the six-yard box and the striker made no mistake putting his side in front. Benzema is the man of the moment for Real as the Striker has scored 12 goals
in his last 11 appearances.
The goal seemed to wake up Atletico and they made a series of attacks on Iker Casillas’ goal, particularly a move involving Diego Forlan, Tiago http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-c33030 Aguero tested Real’s defence. Striker Aguero looked definite to score but centre back Pepe’s
superb clearance denied him.
Just after the half-hour mark, Real where able to double their advantage. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629 failed to capitalise on a ball in the Atletico box but Marcelo Vieira da Silva Junior gathered and found Mesut Ozil who made no mistake curling his shot past the
goalkeeper.
The second half began with the onus on Atletico to score. In the 48th minute, Forlan blazed a shot just wide. Atletico desperately tried to open their account but goalkeeper Casillas was having a wonderful evening making terrific saves.
Atletico were finally rewarded for their work in the 86th minute after fantastic inter play with youngster Koke. Striker Aguero’s low shot found the back of the net reducing the deficit to 2-1. In the closing minutes, Atletico tried to find an
equaliser but it was not to be, enabling Real to pick up three points.
Real’s next fixture is at home against Sporting Gijon on 2 April, 2011 while Atletico travel to Osasuna the same day.
