Real Madrid looking for new striker
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that the club are looking to sign a new striker ahead of the new La Liga season.
While last season’s league runners-up have been attempting to shore up their back-line with moves for defenders Maicon and Thiago Silva of Inter Milan and AC Milan respectively, ‘The Special One’ revealed he is in the market for another forward after Real legend Raul González Blanco departed for German Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
Mourinho was reported as saying that: "Apart from signing a new defender, I also want to add another forward to the team. A new attacker would be very much welcome. I'd rather have one more forward than being short of options up front."
Third option needed
He currently has Argentine Gonzalo Higuain and Frenchman Karim Benzema on the books in his striking department, but feels the need to add a third option. Although Cristiano Ronaldo can also play up front, Mourinho revealed he would rather use the Portuguese superstar’s talents elsewhere. He said: “I prefer to give him a bit more freedom on the pitch. He's too talented to have him up front all the time."
Higuain looks to be the preferred option for the striking role at the Bernebau. He has been at the club since January 2007 and since then, has established himself as one of football’s most talented strikers. The 22-year-old helped Real to La Liga titles in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons and has scored 64 goals in 139 games across all competitions for the club.
Despite a high-profile move from Olympique Lyonnais last summer, Benzema did not quite hit the heights that were expected of him at the Spanish giants. The 22-year-old had an enormously successful spell at Lyon, but at Madrid he has scored just nine goals in 33 games across all competitions.
