Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho concedes the La Liga title in the ongoing season
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has admitted that it would be ‘practically impossible’ for his side to win the La Liga crown following their defeat to Sporting Gijon on Saturday, 2 April, 2011.
The defeat has allowed League leaders http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 to open up an eight-point lead at the top of standings- a lead which Jose Mourinho believes will be too much to overcome.
A late strike from Sporting’s Miguel de las Cuevas saw his side walk away from the Santiago Bernabeu with all three points, ending Mourinho’s perfect home game record which stretches back to his time with Porto. But perhaps more importantly, that goal also
ended Madrid’s already wafer thin title hopes. Barcelona took full advantage of the slip up from Real, winning their game against Villarreal to go eight points ahead of their archrivals.
It has given Mourinho little option but to concede the title race. Speaking after the match, the enigmatic Portuguese said, “Until the mathematics say otherwise then no, but looking at things pragmatically and objectively, if today [Saturday] Barca increase
their lead to eight points [Barca beat Villarreal 1-0 in Saturday's late kick-off] you could say it's practically impossible.”
Mourinho was missing a number of key players for the match. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marcelo-c23554 were all absent, resulting in a lack of creativity which might just have cost Real the match. Although they laid siege to the Sporting
goal in the final 10 minutes, they were unable to find the back of the net.
While Mourinho praised the opposition for their dogged defending, he was left ruing Real’s missed chances.
The Madrid boss said, “Our opponents defended, defended and defended. They had one chance and they scored one goal. I praised them because they fought a lot and they fought to try to have luck on their side. We had four, five, six chances to score and we
couldn't. That's football and tomorrow's another day.”
Barcelona are now favourites to go on and win the La Liga crown in the ongoing 2010-11 season.
