Real Madrid offered Tottenham Hotspur target - Diego Forlan
The Spurs boss has been looking to add a world-class striker to his side after failing in an effort to buy Sevilla's Luis Fabiano in the summer.
In spite of the fact that Forlan was considered a flop during his time at Manchester United, he found his touch again at Atletico Madrid and single-handedly took Uruguay to the 4th place at the 2010 World Cup. He also
achieved the best player award of the prestigious competition beating favourites Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Since the arrival of Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart at White Hart Lane, Harry has preferred to play only one striker up front, but because of Jermain Defoe’s long-term injury absence, goals have been hard to come by.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has been linked with Didier Drogba from Chelsea, Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor and 17-year-old strike sensation Romelu Lukaku from Anderlecht.
However, the 31-year-old is seen as a straightforward and economical substitute because of his uneasy rapport with boss Quique Sanchez Flores.
Marca, Spanish sports daily, reports that Diego has been offered to Real by Atletico for approximately $25million. On the contrary, Atletico are anticipating a bidding war as Tottenham and Juventus are keen on signing the player.
The report states that an authorized third party offered Forlan to Real Madrid with the amount that represents the release clause fee in Forlan's contract.
Redknapp is uncertain in his strike department and could be limited to only one fit striker, Peter Crouch, when they play against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, following the back injury sustained by Roman Pavlyuchenko in Tuesday
night's 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
England forward Crouch could regain his place in the starting line-up if the Russian Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane fail to regain full fitness.
A scan on Monday showed that current captain of the Irish national team had picked up slight ligament injury and his manager is eager to have him available against the Rovers.
Redknapp said, “I could do with Robbie if Pavlyuchenko's got a bad back, it leaves me with only Crouchy. I've got no one else I can push up front, really, even (Aaron) Lennon, who could play through the middle at a pinch.”
Attacking midfielder and winger Aaron Lennon will also be absent on Saturday after suffering a hamstring injury.
Marca said on Wednesday, "Atletico intends to sound out the possibility of Forlan's transfer in January for one reason above all: the request of its coach Quique Sanchez Flores"
The striker’s form has been poor since the start of the season, having scored just 3 league goals and having been goal-less for the last two months.
The former Manchester United striker won the Spanish Primera Liga also known as La Liga and has won the ‘European Golden Boot’ award twice. He was the highest goal scorer in the 2010 World Cup. Thus, he was awarded the Golden Ball.
Forlan has shown keen interest in English Premier League and said last month that he would welcome a return to England if there is a good offer. Therefore, the January transfer window is going to be an exciting time for the 31-year-old.
