Real Madrid players pleased with win over Espanyol
Several Real Madrid players on Wednesday spoke of their delight at picking up three points against Espanyol the night before with a 3-0 result.
The La Liga giants took the lead through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in the first half before strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema completed a comprehensive victory. The win was marred, however,
as each side finished the game with 10 men after Madrid defender Pepe and Espanyol’s Ernesto Galan were dismissed.
Despite the win, Madrid often struggled to get to grips with the challenge posed by Espanyol. Nevertheless, club captain Iker Casillas and central defender Ricardo Carvalho have hailed the result and claimed
it was a sign that the team, which underwent an overhaul over the summer, are becoming more settled under new head coach Jose Mourinho.
'We need time'
Goalkeeper Casillas told Spanish daily newspaper AS that: "Every game we demand more, the team is winning, we are on top [of the league] and it is not easy for people who have just arrived to settle in
so quickly. We continue to urge patience. We're in heading in the right direction. We must maintain order in all areas, it is true that sometimes it seems that we deviated from that but that's okay — we need time."
Former Chelsea player Carvalho, who moved to the Bernebau this summer, added that the win acted as a confidence boost but insisted that further improvements had to be made if Madrid were to win silverware
this year.
He said that: “"It is important to win these games because it gives us confidence and encouragement. These are games we have to win to keep growing as a team. Today we had to play well and win, we won
but I'm sure we will improve our game.”
Madrid’s next game will take place on Saturday, when they travel to take on Levante.
