Real Madrid striker Emmanuel Adebayor has said that the defeat against Sporting Gijon over the weekend motivated his team for Tuesday night’s 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the UEFA Champions quarter-final at Santiago Bernabeu.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Togo-c3022 striker scored a brace in a four-goal win to put his team in a commanding position to reach the semi-finals of the competition. The defeat at the weekend provided a major setback in Madrid’s chances to catch Barcelona on top of the La Liga table.
The Los Blancos now trail the leaders by seven points and with the League getting out of their reach, Madrid have strengthened their position towards winning their 10th Champions League title.
The former Arsenal striker praised his team’s character and spirit to recover from the defeat in such a positive fashion.
“Our motivation was key tonight; we knew we didn't want to reproduce a performance like last Saturday's,” an ecstatic Adebayor told UEFA.com after the match. “We all showed great personality and great character and, in the end, whenever a team plays with
spirit and hunger they always have a chance to win. Our desire tonight paved the way for our reward and for that we're extremely happy.”
Adebayor joined Madrid on loan from Manchester City in January 2011and has scored 5 goals in 14 matches for them so far. The 27-year-old is looking to extend his stay at the Spanish capital and wants to join the club on a permanent basis.
The striker added that he is willing to play in any role the club needs him in and he is delighted to score his first UEFA Champions League goal for the club.
“Since I've joined this club, I've had the opportunity to play in three different competitions and I've now scored in each one of them,” the 27-year-old striker explained.
The former AS Monaco man warned his teammates not to get complacent after the win as anything is possible in football. He admitted that Tottenham Hotspur are a dangerous team and a trip to White Hart Lane will not be easy.
